The Home Secretary announced some significant changes to the immigration rules this week that are expected to be implemented in Spring 2024.
The most important changes are:
1. Students (except doctoral students) will not be allowed to bring dependents to the UK.
2. The minimum wage for skilled worker visas will rise to £38,700.
3. The minimum income to sponsor a spouse/partner visa will increase from £18,600 to £38,700.
4. The graduate visa will be reviewed.
Regarding the 3rd point, the current minimum income required for a British citizen or resident with indefinite leave to remain to bring a partner to the UK is £18,600. The government is proposing to increase this figure to £38,700.
If this measure is implemented, those most affected will be women, part-time workers, ethnic minorities and people living outside of London. Also, many British citizens planning to return to the UK with their families will not be able to do so, and in particular, many children will not be able to accompany their mothers to the UK.
If you are thinking of applying for a spouse visa, make sure you do so before the rules change.
