1.1 I applied for a new visa before my previous visa expired. Can I remain legally in the UK while I wait?
Yes. If you had valid immigration permission and submitted a valid application to extend or change that permission before it expired, Section 3C of the Immigration Act 1971 automatically extends your permission while the Home Office considers your application.
1.2 Can I continue working while I wait for a decision from the Home Office?
If you submitted your application in time, you continue to be subject to the same work conditions that applied under your previous permission. If you were allowed to work under your previous visa, you can normally continue working. If there were restrictions on your right to work, those restrictions also continue.
1.3 Can I travel outside the UK while I have a pending visa application?
It is not advisable. Leaving the UK while an application is pending may result in the application being treated as withdrawn. In addition, if you do not have a valid visa or permission to return to the UK, you may not be able to re-enter.
1.4 How can I prove my immigration status using my eVisa?
An eVisa is the digital record of your immigration status. The UK no longer normally issues physical evidence of immigration status. Through your UKVI account, you can check your status and generate a “share code” to prove, for example, your right to work or rent in the UK.
1.5 I have changed my passport. Do I need to update my UKVI account?
Yes. It is important to update your UKVI account and link your new passport, particularly before travelling. You can do this here:

1.6 What should I do if my employer cannot check my right to work because I cannot generate a share code?
Normally, you can generate a share code so that your employer can check your right to work. If the system does not allow you to do this, for example because you have a pending application, your employer can use the Home Office Employer Checking Service to ask the government directly whether you have the right to work.

1.7 What should I do if my landlord cannot check my right to rent?
Normally, you can generate a specific share code to prove your right to rent. If this does not work, in certain circumstances your landlord can use the Home Office Landlord Checking Service.
